That musty, sour smell coming from your front-load washer is one of the most common complaints we hear from homeowners across Chicago, Niles, Evanston, and Oak Park. The smell transfers to clean laundry, lingers in the laundry room, and gets worse the longer it is ignored.

The cause is almost always the same: mold and mildew growing inside the washer where water sits and moisture cannot escape. Here is exactly where it grows, why it happens, and what our technicians do to fix it for good.

Why does my front load washer smell like mildew?

Front-load washers trap moisture in three places after every cycle: the door gasket (the rubber seal around the door opening), the detergent dispenser drawer, and the drum itself. When the door is closed immediately after a wash, that moisture has nowhere to go. Mold spores, which are always present in household air, land in these warm, damp surfaces and grow.

The smell starts faint — a slightly stale odor on towels or bedding. Within weeks it becomes unmistakable: a sharp, musty, mildew smell that transfers to every load you wash.

Top-load washers can develop the same problem, especially high-efficiency top-loaders like the Whirlpool Cabrio, Maytag Bravos, and LG TurboWash models, which use very little water and leave residue in the drum and under the agitator.

Where exactly does mold grow inside a washing machine?

Our technicians find mold in the same three places on nearly every smelly washer we service in Niles and Chicago:

1. The door gasket — the thick rubber seal that presses against the door when it closes. Water, lint, and detergent residue collect in the folds of the gasket after every cycle. This is where the heaviest mold growth almost always lives. Pull the gasket back and check the inner folds — black or dark gray staining is mold.

2. The detergent dispenser drawer — detergent and fabric softener residue builds up in the drawer housing and becomes a food source for mold. The drawer often smells strongly on its own even when the drum does not.

3. The drum and door glass — a thin biofilm of mold can form on the inner drum surface and door glass, especially if the door is always kept closed.

Can I clean a smelly washer myself?

Yes — in most cases a thorough cleaning removes the smell completely. Here is what works:

Step 1 — Clean the door gasket manually. Mix one part white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. Pull back all the folds of the rubber gasket and spray the solution inside. Scrub with an old toothbrush. Wipe dry with a clean cloth. If you see heavy black mold, use a diluted bleach solution instead (one tablespoon of bleach per cup of water) and wear gloves.

Step 2 — Remove and clean the dispenser drawer. Pull the drawer out completely (most slide straight out with a tab pressed). Soak it in hot water with dish soap for 15 minutes. Scrub all compartments and the housing behind the drawer. Dry before replacing.

Step 3 — Run a hot cleaning cycle. Add two cups of white vinegar directly to the drum (not the dispenser) and run the longest, hottest cycle available — usually a Tub Clean or Sanitize cycle. Do not add laundry.

Step 4 — Run a second cycle with baking soda. Add half a cup of baking soda to the drum and run another hot cycle. This neutralizes any remaining vinegar and lifts residue from the drum walls.

Step 5 — Leave the door open. After every wash cycle from now on, leave the door ajar for at least two hours to allow the drum and gasket to dry completely.

What if the smell comes back after cleaning?

If the smell returns within a week or two of a thorough cleaning, one of three things is happening:

The gasket is too far gone to clean. Heavy mold growth penetrates the rubber over time and cannot be fully removed by surface cleaning. The gasket needs to be replaced. This is a common repair on LG, Samsung, and Whirlpool front-loaders that have had the smell problem for several months. Our washer repair technicians replace front-load door gaskets same day on most models.

The drain pump filter is clogged. Front-load washers have a drain pump filter (usually behind a small panel at the front bottom of the machine) that catches lint, coins, and debris. When this filter is clogged, water sits in the pump housing between cycles and becomes a mold source. Clean this filter every 3 months.

The drum bearings or tub seal are leaking. In rare cases, water seeping past a failing tub seal creates a persistent damp environment inside the machine that produces a continuous smell. If you hear a grinding or rumbling noise during spin alongside the smell, this may be the cause.

What happened on a recent Niles service call

A homeowner in Niles, IL called us after their LG front-load washer had developed a strong mildew smell that was transferring to their laundry despite two attempts at cleaning the drum themselves.

When our technician arrived, he found heavy black mold growth deep in the folds of the door gasket that the homeowner had not been able to reach, and a completely blocked drain pump filter full of lint and debris. The drum had also developed a thin mold film from months of the door being kept closed.

Location: Niles, IL
Appliance: LG Front-Load Washer
Issue: Strong mildew smell transferring to clean laundry
Diagnosis: Mold in door gasket folds, blocked drain pump filter, drum biofilm
Repair: Door gasket replaced, drain pump filter cleaned, drum sanitized, drain pump tested
Technician: Yurii

After the gasket replacement and filter cleaning, the smell was gone completely. The homeowner was shown how to leave the door ajar after every cycle and how to access the drain filter for monthly cleaning.

How do I prevent my washer from smelling in the future?

Four habits eliminate the problem permanently:

  • Leave the door open after every cycle — even a few inches is enough to let the drum and gasket dry
  • Use HE detergent only and use less than the recommended amount — excess detergent is the primary food source for mold
  • Clean the gasket and dispenser monthly with white vinegar
  • Run a Tub Clean cycle once a month — most LG, Samsung, and Whirlpool washers have this built in
  • Clean the drain pump filter every 3 months — the panel is at the front bottom of the machine

Is a smelly washer covered under warranty?

Mold and odor are considered maintenance issues and are not covered under standard appliance warranties. However, if the door gasket has deteriorated and requires replacement, some manufacturers cover the part (though not labor) within the first year. Check your documentation or call the manufacturer directly before scheduling a repair.
