What are the most frequent error codes for Samsung washers?

After hundreds of calls for Samsung washer repairs across Chicago, the same codes come up repeatedly. Here they are in order of how often we see them:

UE / UC — Unbalanced load

The most frequent Samsung washer code by far. UE means the washer has detected that the load inside the drum is unbalanced and cannot safely spin at high speed. The machine pauses to protect itself and the drum bearing from the forces of an off-center spin.

What to try: Open the door, redistribute the laundry evenly around the drum, and restart the spin cycle. Bulky items like bedding, towels, or a single heavy garment are the most common culprits. If UE returns on a balanced load, the suspension rods or shock absorbers have worn out and the drum can no longer self-correct during spin.

When to call us: If UE persists after redistributing the load, or if the washer vibrates violently before showing the code, the suspension system needs to be inspected and replaced. See our article on washer shaking violently during spin for more detail.

4E / 4C — Water supply error

The washer is not receiving enough water or the water is not filling within the expected time. This is the second most common Samsung washer code we see on Chicago service calls.

What to try first:

  • Check that both water supply taps behind the washer are fully open
  • Check the inlet hoses for kinks or bends
  • Remove the inlet hoses from the back of the washer and clean the mesh filter screens inside the connections — these block with mineral deposits over time, especially in Chicago's hard water areas
  • Run a short cycle to confirm water is now flowing normally

When to call us: If the taps are open, hoses are clear, and filters are clean but 4E keeps returning, the water inlet valve inside the machine has failed and needs to be replaced. This is a same-day repair on most Samsung front-load and top-load models.

5E / 5C / SE — Drain error

The washer cannot drain water from the tub within the allowed time. Water is left standing in the drum at the end of the cycle and the door stays locked.

What to try first:

  • On Samsung front-loaders, find the small access panel at the front bottom of the machine. Unscrew the drain pump filter cap slowly — water will come out, so have a towel ready. Remove any lint, coins, or debris clogging the filter
  • Check that the drain hose at the back is not kinked or inserted too far into the standpipe — Samsung drain hoses should not be inserted more than 6 inches into the drain standpipe
  • Run a drain-only cycle to confirm the issue is resolved

When to call us: If the filter is clear, the hose position is correct, and 5E still returns, the drain pump motor has failed and needs to be replaced. This is one of the most common Samsung washer repairs we handle across Chicago and Elmwood Park.

DC — Door or unbalance code (model-dependent)

On some Samsung top-load models, DC indicates a door or lid lock fault rather than an unbalanced load. On front-load models, DC typically means the same as UE — unbalanced load during spin. Check your model documentation if you are unsure which applies.

What to try: If the washer will not start at all and shows DC, the lid lock or door latch has failed. Do not force the door. On front-loaders, if DC appears during spin, redistribute the load as described for UE above.

dE / dC — Door lock error (front-load models)

The washer door is not locking correctly or the door lock assembly has failed. The machine will not start a cycle until the door lock is confirmed closed.

What to try: Close the door firmly and try starting the cycle again. If the door clicks shut but dE still appears, the door lock assembly has failed mechanically or electrically and needs to be replaced.

When to call us: Door lock replacement is a straightforward same-day repair. Do not attempt to bypass the lock — the door interlock is a safety device.

nF / nF1 — No fill or reversed hoses

nF is a water fill fault similar to 4E but specifically indicates that no water is entering the machine at all rather than just slow fill. nF1 specifically means the hot and cold water supply hoses have been reversed — the cold hose is connected to the hot inlet and vice versa.

What to try: Check that water supply valves are open. If you see nF1, swap the hot and cold hoses at the back of the machine — the cold hose (blue fitting) should go to the cold inlet, the hot hose (red fitting) to the hot inlet.

SUD / SUd — Excess suds

The washer has detected too many suds in the drum. This most commonly happens when non-HE detergent is used, or when HE detergent is used in too large a quantity. The machine pauses to allow suds to dissipate before continuing.

What to try: Wait for the SUD code to clear on its own — the washer will attempt to continue the cycle automatically after suds dissipate. Switch to HE detergent and use less than the recommended amount going forward. Samsung washers are highly sensitive to excess suds.

3E — Motor or hall sensor fault

The motor or the hall sensor (which monitors motor speed) has detected a fault. This may appear as a motor communication error or a drive system problem.

What to try: Reduce the load size and run a short cycle. If 3E returns on a small, balanced load, the motor wiring, hall sensor, or control board needs to be tested by a technician. Do not continue running the machine.

Samsung washer repair in Skokie, IL

Location: Skokie, IL
Appliance: Samsung Front-Load Washer
Issue: 5E code mid-cycle, drum full of water, door locked
Diagnosis: Drain pump filter completely blocked
Repair: Filter cleared, pump tested functional, full drain cycle confirmed
Technician: Yurii

A homeowner in Skokie, IL, called us after their Samsung front-load washer stopped mid-cycle, showing a 5E code. The drum was full of water, and the door was locked. They had already run the drain cycle twice with no result.

When our technician arrived, he accessed the drain pump filter at the front of the machine and found it completely blocked with lint and a small amount of change, enough to stop all water flow through the pump. After clearing the filter and testing the pump electrically to confirm it was still functioning, he ran a full drain cycle. The drum emptied normally, and the 5E code did not return.

The repair took 30 minutes. No parts were needed. The homeowner was shown how to access and clean the drain filter every 3 months.

When a reset won't fix a Samsung washer error code

A reset — unplugging the machine for 5 minutes and restarting — clears the display but does not fix the underlying fault. If the same code returns after a reset, the component that triggered it has failed and needs to be repaired:

  • 4E returns after checking hoses and filters — inlet valve failed, needs replacement
  • 5E returns after cleaning filter — drain pump motor failed, needs replacement
  • UE returns on a balanced load — suspension rods or shock absorbers worn, need replacement
  • dE returns after closing door firmly — door lock assembly failed, needs replacement
  • 3E returns on a small load — motor or hall sensor fault, technician required
