Where is the reset button on a GE refrigerator ice maker?
The reset button location varies by GE model. Here is where to look based on your refrigerator type:
GE Profile French door refrigerator
On most GE Profile French door models, the ice maker reset button is located on the front left face of the ice maker unit, inside the upper freezer section. It is a small rectangular or circular button, sometimes labeled "Test" or marked with a small arrow symbol. Press and hold it for 10 seconds until you hear a chime or the ice maker begins to cycle. The arm or auger inside the ice maker should begin rotating within 10–15 seconds of a successful reset.
GE side-by-side refrigerator
On GE side-by-side models, the reset is usually a rocker switch on the front face of the ice maker, located inside the freezer on the left wall. Flip it to Off, wait 30 seconds with the freezer door closed, then flip it back to On. This is the correct reset sequence for most side-by-side GE models — cycling it rapidly without waiting often does not trigger a full reset.
GE top-freezer refrigerator
Older GE top-freezer models with an ice maker typically have a feeler arm (wire arm) rather than an electronic reset button. If the arm is in the raised (off) position, lower it manually. If it is already down and the ice maker is not running, unplug the refrigerator for 30 seconds and plug back in — this forces a full control board reset on most older models.
GE bottom-freezer and column refrigerators
GE bottom-freezer models and GE column refrigerators (including Monogram) locate the ice maker in the upper fresh food section or in a dedicated ice compartment. The reset button is typically on the right side or bottom face of the ice maker module. Consult your model-specific manual if the button is not visible — on some column models it requires removing a small access panel.
How long after a GE ice maker reset should you wait for ice?
This is where most homeowners get impatient and assume the reset failed. After a successful reset cycle, a GE ice maker needs:
- 24 hours to produce the first full batch of ice from a cold start
- 90 minutes per cycle on average for ongoing ice production
- The freezer must be at or below 10°F (-12°C) for the ice maker to run — if the freezer is warmer, ice production pauses automatically
If no ice has appeared after 24 hours following a reset, the problem is not the reset procedure — a component has failed and needs to be diagnosed.
What does a GE ice maker reset actually fix?
A reset clears the ice maker’s cycle memory and restarts the fill-freeze-eject sequence from the beginning. It resolves:
- A stuck or jammed ejector arm that stopped the cycle mid-way
- A temporary sensor glitch that caused the ice maker to pause
- A power interruption that left the ice maker in a confused state
- A full ice bin sensor that got stuck in the “full” position after the bin was emptied
A reset does not fix a failed water inlet valve, a burned-out ice maker module, a frozen fill tube, or a freezer temperature problem. If any of these have failed, the ice maker will go through the reset cycle and then stop again — sometimes within minutes, sometimes after one partial batch of ice.
When does a GE ice maker reset not work?
If you have reset the ice maker correctly and waited 24 hours with no ice, look for these signs to identify what is actually wrong:
Reset triggers one cycle then stops
The ice maker completes one test cycle during the reset — you hear it run — but no ice drops and it does not cycle again. This almost always means the ice maker module has failed. The reset triggered the motor, but the module cannot complete a normal fill-freeze-eject sequence on its own.
No movement at all after reset
If pressing the reset button produces no sound, no movement, and no chime, either the ice maker is not receiving power or the module is completely dead. Check that the ice maker switch is in the On position and the wire arm is lowered before assuming the module has failed.
Water dispenser also not working
If the water dispenser at the door stopped working at the same time as the ice maker, the water inlet valve has most likely failed. The inlet valve controls both water functions — when it fails, both stop at once. A reset will not restore either function.
Ice maker cycles but produces no water
The ice maker goes through the motions — you can hear it trying — but no water enters the mold and no ice is produced. This points to either a frozen fill tube blocking water flow, or a failed inlet valve. A manual defrost (unplugging for 2 hours with freezer door open) will clear a frozen tube. If the tube is clear and still no water flows, the inlet valve needs to be replaced.
Same-day GE ice maker repair in Jefferson Park
A homeowner in Jefferson Park, IL called us after their GE side-by-side refrigerator stopped producing ice. They had already tried the rocker switch reset twice — flipping it off and back on — and waited two days each time with no result. The ice bin was empty and the wire arm was in the down position.
When our technician ran a manual test cycle, the ice maker module cycled once and then went completely silent. No water entered the mold during the test. He inspected the fill tube and confirmed it was clear with no ice blockage. Testing the ice maker module itself showed it had failed internally — it could trigger a single test rotation but could not complete a full fill-freeze-eject sequence on its own.
Location: Jefferson Park, IL
Appliance: GE Side-by-Side Refrigerator
Issue: Ice maker not producing ice after rocker switch reset, ice bin empty, arm in down position
Diagnosis: Ice maker module failed — single test cycle only, no water fill
Repair: Ice maker module replaced, full test cycle confirmed ice production
Technician: Slava
The repair took approximately 50 minutes and was completed in a single visit. The ice maker completed its first full production cycle before our technician left the home.
